In this Hyphen Hub event, we explored the frontiers of experimental sound performance with artists who create unusual electronic instruments.
Phillip Stearns
Phillip Stearns is a New York-based artist working with electronic media and data security. He employs processes of deconstruction, reconfiguration, and creative misuse to produce works that span a wide range of disciplines–from sound art, music composition, and audiovisual performance to digital textiles, interactive electronic installations, and experimental photography. For this event, Stearns performed and talked about Apeiron | Peras, his new audio-visual work performed on custom hardware designed to directly audify and visualize raw electronic signals created using feedback.
MSHR
MSHR is a collaborative project by Portland, Oregon/New York-based artists Birch Cooper and Brenna Murphy. The duo, who were then residents at Eyebeam, produced unusual installations, sculptures, and ritualistic performances that place the human body into a dynamic relationship with sound and light, generating expanded sensory experiences. MSHR’s live performances revolve around a unique system of light-audio feedback that employs handmade synthesizers and sculptural interfaces. For this event, they performed and talked about their mysterious work Liquid Hand ~ Time Blade. MSHR returned to Hyphen Hub years later to create a larger experience as part of Hyphen Hub’s Visions of the Future series of events. They also were featured around the same time at MOMA PS1 and the New York Museum of Art and Design.
