Vinyl Requiem | An Evening to Honor the Life and Legacy of Philip Jeck

This event was presented in partnership with Touch, an organization based in London and Los Angeles that has created innovative audiovisual productions and live events since 1982.
This Hyphen Hub event celebrated the life and legacy of the acclaimed British experimental composer, turntablist, and multimedia artist, Philip Jeck, who died in March 2022 in Liverpool. The evening featured special guest performances by artists who worked and collaborated with him. This was the first event celebrating Philip Jeck’s life, with the second part taking place in London 24 June 2022 presented by Touch.
The event featured Marina Rosenfeld, Phill Niblock with David Watson, Ted Riederer, & Zachary Paul who each paid tribute in their own unique way.
Marina Rosenfeld is an artist and composer based in Brooklyn, New York. Over the last 30 years she has created a significant body of work spanning the fields of music, performance, and installation, articulating a critical position in relation to aural and visual modernisms and histories of material and social practice in sound. Turntablism and improvisation have been central concerns and areas of her research and practice. Rosenfeld´s work has been commissioned and exhibited widely, including recent solo institutional exhibitions ‘We’ll start a fire’ at Kunsthaus Baselland (2021), ‘Music Stands’ at the Artists Institute (2019), ’Deathstar’ at Portikus Frankfurt (2017), Park Avenue Armory, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney and Liverpool Biennials, among others. A “one-time refugee from punk and sometime band member,” Ted Riederer has armed himself with electric guitars, amplifiers, old LPs, record players, drum kits, hard disk recorders, photography equipment, a vinyl record lathe, and long-stemmed roses as he’s ambled artistically from the Americas to the Antipodes. His work has been shown nationally and internationally including exhibitions at PS1, Prospect 1.5, Goff and Rosenthal Berlin, Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, Jack Hanley Gallery (San Francisco), Marianne Boesky Gallery, the Liverpool Biennial, and the Dhaka Arts Center, Bangladesh. His ‘Never Records’ project has traveled from New York to the Liverpool Biennial (both projects curated by Asher Remy Toledo), to Derry, to New Orleans, to Texas, and to London, which was sponsored by the Tate Modern. An intermedia artist using music, film, photography, video, and computers, Phill has been creating music and intermedia performances that have been shown at numerous venues around the world since the mid-1960s. Since 1985, he has served as the director of the Experimental Intermedia Foundation, an organization for avant-garde music based in New York with a branch in Ghent, and curator of the foundation’s record label XI. Known for his thick, loud drones of music, Niblock’s signature sound is filled with microtones of instrumental timbres that generate many other tones in the performance space. In 2013, his diverse artistic career was the subject of a retrospective realized in partnership between Circuit (Contemporary Art Centre Lausanne) and Musée de l’Elysée. Zachary Paul is a violinist and composer currently located in New York. His work explores the boundaries of perception, the invocation of trance states, and the juxtaposition of stasis and movement. In live performance, he builds lush soundscapes via improvisation, representing his immediate experience and surrounding space. His work draws from a long lineage of artists exploring sustained tones within organic performance, including Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros, and La Monte Young. David Watson is an experimental musician. A guitarist, bagpiper and advocate for intelligent listening, his work encompasses improvisation and composition in a wide variety of contexts. Originally from New Zealand, he has lived and worked in New York City since 1987. In New Zealand, he co-founded the experimental record label Braille Records and organized national and international music festivals there. He settled in New York and into the nascent scene around the Knitting Factory.
He has worked intensively with a wide range of extraordinary artists, including Chris Abrahams, Robert Ashley, Frisner Augustin, Marcia Bassett, Tony Buck, Che Chen, Anthony Coleman, David First, Alastair Galbraith, Frode Gjerstad, Shelley Hirsch, Samara Lubelski, Chris Mann, Christian Marclay, Sean Meehan, Ikue Mori, Bill Nace, Andrea Parkins, Lee Ranaldo, Talibam!, Yoshi Wada, Alex Waterman, John Zorn, $75 Bill, amongst many others.
