Presented in conjunction with our partners at HARVESTWORKS, this event focused on 3D immersive sound with two New York-based artists—Timothy Fodness and Christina Campanella—who created mesmerizing sonic landscapes.
Timothy Fodnes
Timothy Fodness is a sound artist, sound designer, and writer of short prose. For Hyphen Hub, he presented his new work titled Spacemen Waving at the Camera. In this 5.1 surround sound installation, 12 written pieces generated through automatic writing, journaling, and dream re-interpretation move through worlds blending modular synthesis, sound design, sampling, homemade instruments, and field recordings. The result was a magical and engaging storytelling experience for the audience composed of children and adults, who sat on pillows around the perimeter of the room with dimmed lights, getting lost in the dreamy experience of the artist’s stories.
Christina Campanella
Christina Campanella is a leading composer, performer, and sound artist in music, theater, visual art, and film. She showcased I Went to the Lighthouse (And It Wasn’t There), an immersive 3D sound installation that plumbs a world in which the seas have risen—in particular, the uneasy psychic terrain of an inundated New York City. Created in collaboration with Jim Dawson and Latitude 14, Campanella’s impressionistic electronic score is designed for one live performer and a multi-tiered 8.4.1 system of speakers that surrounds the viewer/listener from all sides and above.
The Hyphen Hub event took place on Friday 7 November 2015 at 7.30 pm with talks by the artists and previews of their sound work.
Campanella’s full-length work was shown on Saturday 8 November 2015 (12-5pm) and Fodness’ full-length work was shown on Sunday 9 November 2015 (12-5 pm).
This event was the second in Hyphen Hub’s partnership and program with Harvestworks created by their TEAM (Technology, Engineering, Art and Music) Lab.
