International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) | Colombia | 2017
Date: 11-18 June 2017
Location: Universidad de Caldas, Manizales, Colombia

ISEA is one of the world’s most prominent international arts and technology events, bringing together scholarly, artistic, and scientific domains in an interdisciplinary discussion and showcase of creative productions applying new technologies in art, electronic, and digital media. The theme of this year’s event was natural biodiversity.

Hyphen Hub was invited to participate as one of the international institutions working at the intersection of art and technological innovation. In addition, Hyphen Hub showcased an evening performance with the Bogotá-based artistic group Atractor, which presented a spectacle called Swarm for ISEA’s closing night celebration.

Swarm is an immersive audiovisual performance which takes an unconventional look at the complex structures of language between some insects that communicate through sound waves such as fireflies, crickets, and bees. Recorded live in the Colombian mountains, the audio field recordings were enabled through Arduino (an open-source platform that enables users to create interactive electronic objects) metamorphosing them into visually mesmerizing, immersive laser projections, which were enhanced by live electronic music developed by the artistic group.
